CATS Get Whiskers Clipped

Wednesday night was a rough night for the Wildcat wrestlers as they began their Concorde District dual meet schedule against James W. Robinson Secondary School and Westfield High School. The CATS began the night mixing it up with 2011 VHSL State Champions Robinson Secondary. Michael Vu began the night for Centreville with a forfeit, giving the Wildcats an early 6-0 lead. Picking up decisions at 120 lbs and 126 lbs, the Rams of Robinson tied the dual score at 6. Sophomore Connor Mitchell put the CATS back in front 9-6 with an 8-2 decision over Avery James. That lead soon vanished as the Rams went on a 4 match run rolling up a 24-9 score over the Wildcats. Ryan Sepulveda, currently ranked 4th in the state added to the Wildcat score with an 11-0 major decision over Josh Trowell. The only other win for Centreville came from 220 pounder Joey Steinbach, who pinned Zach Outzen at the 3:38 mark of his match bringing an end to the Wildcat scoring. When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard showed a disappointing 44-19 score.
The CATS didn’t have much time to feel sorry for themselves as the Bulldogs of Westfield quickly took to the mat anxious to kick the CATS while they were down. Along with coach Belyea, Senior Captains David Chenevey and Ryan Sepulveda attempted to rally their Wildcats for a stronger showing. Chenevey, Centreville’s 195 pounder, fresh of an impressive 6-2 outing at last weeks Knightdale Duals was disappointed to find out he was unable to compete due to a minor medical mishap. David redirected his efforts to rooting on his team along side the coaching staff.
As most know, dogs and cats do not get along, and it was the Bulldogs of Westfield who came out barkin’. Connor Mitchell picked up his second win of the night with an exciting 5-4 win over Ben Cameron. The two battled back and forth before late in the third period when Mitchell took the lead for good and giving Centreville their first points of the dual. The CATS couldn’t keep the Bulldogs off of them as Westfield went on a four match win streak until Sepulveda put an end to it with a closely contested decision over Tyler Morson. Sepulveda’s 3-1 decision was the last match the Wildcats would win although HWT Jason Park picked up a forfeit padding the Centreville final score. Westfield ended the night with another 4 match rumpus and enjoyed a 54-18 victory over the visiting Wildcats.
The CATS will next be in action and welcoming the return of Captain David Chenevey this Friday and Saturday at the Mayhem at Milbrook tournament in Winchester VA. Wrestling begins Friday at 6:00 pm and runs through the evening. Matches will resume Saturday morning at 10:00 am with the finals set for 5:45 pm.
