Tyler Love capped off a fantastic sophomore season with a third place in the VHSL State Wrestling Tournament this past weekend. Love began the weekend with big win over Hylton’s Lawrence Hunt, 6-1. Tyler followed that win up with 6-2 decision over Antavian Leary of South Lakes 6-2. Leary upset Central Region Champion Stone Jiminez of Deep Run in the opening round. Now in the semis, one match from the state finals, Love stepped onto the mat with the 2012 state finalist from First Colonial, Ryland O’Brien. Love opened the match with a quick takedown but was reversed just prior to the end of the first period. With the score knotted at 2, Love chose the bottom position going into the second period, but could not break free of O’Brien. O’Brien rode Love the entire period and chose neutral to start the third. A questionable call on the edge of the mat gave O’Brien a takedown and the eventual win. Dejected, but not willing to quit, Love next battled Westfield’s Tyler Morson to a 2-1 defeat. Love’s win over Morson was the first of three meetings this season and couldn’t have come at a better time. Tyler reached the consolation finals and his final match of the season was set with Great Bridge’s Matthew Reynolds. Love hung onto a 3-2 win placing him third at 182 pounds.
Also making the trip to states were 106 pound freshman Victor Echeverria, 145 pounder Connor Mitchell, and HWT Jason Park. Echeverria lost a tough opening bout to Kellam’s Matt Duffany, 7-2. Not willing to end his season just yet, Victor pinned Glen Allen’s Jacob Francis in the second period keeping his hopes of a state placing in tact. The next round wasn’t so kind to Echeverria as he dropped a hard fought battle against Northern Region Champion Connor Grammes of McLean, 6-5. Grammes came back to take 7th, however Echeverria’s season was now done.
At 145 pounds Junior Connor Mitchell opened his first state tournament with a tough loss to eventual 4th place finisher Justin Trent of First Colonial. Trent was also the Central Region Champion. Mitchell shook off the loss and next butted heads with Colin Saunders of Lake Taylor. During a late match scramble from the neutral position, Mitchell’s shoulders were planted to the mat giving Saunders the win.
Jason Park, Wildcat heavyweight and senior was also making his first trip to the state tournament, but he too found his stay a little unpleasant. Park lost in the opening round to Orange’s Billy Knabe by fall at the 1:26 mark of the first period. During the first round of wrestlebacks, Park lost by pin to Ocean Lakes’ HWT Alex Skidmore just before the buzzer of the second period, ending Park’s wrestling career. Considering this was only Jason Park’s second season on the mats, a state qualification was far more than he could have hoped for. Park put together an incredible season and a great career.
As for the other 3 qualifiers, and alternate Chung Do Kim (113 pounds), their seasons are far from over and the trip to Oscar Smith High School and the state tournament just made them all the more hungry for next year.
Congratulations Tyler Love and the rest of the 2013 Wildcat wrestlers on a great season.

Centreville wrapped up the region tournament this past weekend with a 5th place team finish and four wrestlers qualifying for the state tournament in Chesapeake VA. Light weight Victor Echeverria placed third as did 182 pounder Tyler Love. Echeverria battled and dominated through his Mount Vernon opponent in the consolation finals to earn a major decision and a trip to Va Beach this weekend. Love too manhandled his nemesis from Lake Braddock in the consolation finals and will join Victor on the trip to Chesapeake. Two other Wildcats reached the consolation finals, and earned trips to the beach. Connor Mitchell and HWT Jason Park both placed fourth and earned a seat in the van along with teammates Echeverria and Love. Placing fifth and heading to VA beach as an alternate was 113 pounder Chung Do Kim. Kim battled through a tough bracket and found himself in the consolation semi finals, just one win from his first trip to states. However, Chung Do couldn’t get passed a hungry Annandale Atom as he dropped a close decision knocking him into the fifth and sixth place match. Placing fifth was crucial for Kim as it earned him a place in the van as well as the 113 pound northern region alternate. Kim had to defeat a Lee Lancer opponent that beat him in the opening round of the tournament. Kim went out and took it to the Lancer and walked off the mat victorious.
The productive region tournament didn’t come without some disappointment along the way. Before the tournament even began, senior state hopeful, Will Fulton bowed out of the competition with an injury that ended his season and high school wrestling career. Joe Steinbach, a 2012 VHSL state qualifier had been battling a shoulder injury the past few weeks, and couldn’t shake it off as he was defeated in the consolation rounds negating any chance of a return trip to the state championships. 160 pounder Dillon Dull put together a fantastic senior campaign and was putting together a good region tournament as well when he was derailed and eliminated by a Warhawk from Madison High School in the consolation quarter finals. The season is not over for these three seniors as they will be greatly needed to get their teammates prepared for this years championships which will be held at Oscar Smith High School this Friday and Saturday, February 15th and 16th.
Congratulations to the Wildcats and all of the Northern Region wrestlers. Best of luck this weekend at VA Beach.

Centreville High School had a fantastic showing at this year’s Concord District Wrestling Championships held at Westfield High School this past weekend. Robinson won the tournament with host Westfield coming in second. The Wildcats finished third on the weekend and crowned one champion. Second year sophomore Jordan Brooks avenged an earlier loss to Chantilly 220 pounder Brian Kim with a close 6-5 decision. Brooks opened the match with a brutal double leg takedown and never really looked back. Due to some false starts, Brooks had to let his opponent up a few times to avoid possible penalty points which made the match far closer than it really was. Brooks sealed the deal to his first district title with a late takedown, but again letting his opponent up relinquishing a point for the escape. Jordan remained aggressive and was able to fight off a few feeble shots from Kim as the final buzzer blew.
Centreville put together a great semi final round with six wrestlers making it to the finals. Victor Echeverria stuck Reaves Arnold of Chantilly half way through the second period registering the fall which set up a rematch with Robinson’s stud 106 pounder Greyson Olimpo. This finals match was a battle from the get go and came right down to the wire. Olimpo got out to an early lead, but like in their previous match this season, Echeverria’s strong conditioning wore Olimpo out throughout the bout. Mid way through match Victor reversed Olimpo and put the Ram onto his back. With the period ending, Victor was denied near fall points by the official, which were apparently earned as the referee held the points in the air for the fans to see, however for no apparent reason, they two point nearfall was taken off the board with no explanation. This would make a huge difference in the outcome of the match. Again Echeverria was relentless in his quest for his first district title but simply ran out of time. When the clock registered all zeros, the scoreboard showed a 7-5 score in favor of Olimpo. At 113 pounds second year sophomore Chung Do Kim too avenged an earlier season loss to his Robinson nemesis, with an 8-6 OT victory over Brandon Greyson. In the finals, Chung Do made an early mistake on his feet and was immediately put to his back by Westfield’s Gabe Ryan. Ryan went on to record the first period pin, ending Kim’s hopes of a district crown. Centreville’s third finalist found Will Fulton (152 pounds) against Robinson’s Jack Bass. Bass is currently the top ranked wrestler in the state and the 10th ranked wrestler, among juniors, in the country (Intermat rankings). Fulton and Bass battled tough throughout the first period exchanging a few takedowns for escapes. At the 47 second mark of the first period, Bass was able to gain final control of Fulton scoring a pin for the Rams. Fulton worked his way into the finals with a win over Jay Aiello during the opening round and a pin of Chantilly’s Troy Fries in the semis. At 182 pounds for the wildcats, sophomore Tyler Love decisioned state ranked Daniel Mika in the semi finals with a 9-5 decision. Mika won a close contest with Love a few weeks prior, but was unable to handle Tyler this past weekend. The win moved Love into the finals where he butted heads with Westfield senior Tyler Morson. The two Concord District foes traded shots throughout the match, but neither was able secure a takedown. Love chose the bottom position in the second period but was unable to work free of Morson. With the score still locked at 0, Morson chose the bottom position in the third period. Twenty seconds into the period, Morson wiggled free for his escape and eventual win. Love made many desperate attempts at taking down Morson, but was not successfull in gaining any real control. Love got in deep on several shots, but could not secure a takedown. The 1-0 decision was hard to swallow, but Love expects to avenge this loss at this weekends Northern Region tournament at Hayfield Secondary School. After four straight losses for the Wildcats, Jordan Brooks came out on fire and disposed of his finals opponent in grand style. Brooks got up early, scored late, and hung on for his first, of hopefully three District titles. Prior to the finals, Brooks dismantled Robinson’s JP Vittori with a first period pin giving his team much needed team points and a chance at winning the 220 pound district title. Standing atop the podium was a proud moment for Jordan and his family. The final match of the afternoon involved Centreville’s sixth finalist, heavy weight Jason Park. Park faced junior Jake Pinkston of Robinson. Pinkston was able to pin park a few weeks ago during the district dual meet, but found Park to be far more game this time around. Park was able to fight off many takedown attempts from Pinkston, and ended up dropping the match by a 9-3 margin. Park decisioned Westfield’s Trent Hocog in the semi finals by a score of 8-2. Hocog pinned Park earlier in the season, so it was rewarding to see Park take care of business and defeat the bulldog heavyweight when it counted.
The five runner ups and one champion are expected to do well this weekend at the Regional tournament along with consolation finals winners and teammates Connor Mitchell, Dillon Dull, and Joey Steinbach. All three of these wrestlers earned consolation finals wins and third place medals on the weekend and too are expected to climb atop the Norethern Region podium.
This weekends Regional Championships will be contested at Hayfield Secondary School on Friday and Saturday. Action will begin at 2:00 PM with quarter finals set for 7:30 PM. Action will resume on Saturday with semi final bouts starting at noon. Northern Region finals are set for 5:00 PM.

With the season winding down, Centreville traveled to Berlin PA for the Mountaineer Duals this past weekend. The dual tournament featured teams from Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. Teams were divided into two pools, each team wrestling four matches. The final round would pit the teams from one pool against the other according to how they finished. Centreville first wrestled host Berlin Brothersvalley High School and dropped a 45-15 decision to the far more aggressive Mountaineers. The Wildcats came out flat and could never got things going. The Mountaineers came out aggressive and cruised to an easy opening round decision. The Wildcats next faced Arch Bishop Wood, out of Philadelphia PA. After a firm tongue lashing by coach Belyea, Centreville picked up the pace crushing the Warriors from Philly from the first match till the final whistle blew. The Wildcats next wrestled Bellwood Antis High School and held on to win a closer dual than expected. The Wildcats when up big early in the dual only to have things come down to the final two matches. Now 2-1 on the day, Centreville ended their pool competition with a perfect match against Frankfurt High School, from West Virginia. The Wildcats shut out Frankfurt in grande style pinning all of their neighbors to the west and racking up a perfect score of 84 points. The celebrating didn’t last long as the Wildcats stepped onto the mat, for the final round, against Chestnut Ridge PA. Chestnut Ridge is currently ranked 8th in the state of PA for AA teams. Centreville got a taste of their own medicine as “The Ridge” blanked the Wildcats 69-0. Not a perefect match, but a real beatdown. The Wildcats had little to offer Chestnut Ridge dropping all 14 matches. Many matches saw competitive opening periods, but the PA powerhouse team from Chestnut Ridge had their way with the wildcats and sent the cats home, tails tucked.
Centreville is hoping to turn things around this week as they travel to Chantilly HS this Thursday, January 24th to battle the Chargers in Concorde District competition, and host their own dual tournament (Wildcat Duals) on Saturday. The final two dates of the season should prove interesting for the Wildcats as they will face Chantilly, Herndon, South Lakes, Hayfield, Fairfax, and Hylton. Thursday’s match with Chantilly will begin at 6:00 PM with the JV teams butting heads, and the varsity to follow at 7:30 PM. The Wildcat Duals will begin at 9:00 AM this Saturday and will run through the final round which is scheduled to start at 3:30 PM.

Centreville placed third at the recent Annandale Duals held at Annandale High School on January 12, 2013. The event was a dual Pool event. The Wildcats were in a pool with Lake Braddock, Patriot High School, Woodbridge, and Yorktown. Centreville went 3-1 in their pool, defeating Patriot, Woodbridge, and Yorktown, before losing to eventual runner up, Lake Braddock. Following pool competition, teams were paired up with other teams from the opposing pool. The Wildcats stepped onto the mat with Loudoun Valley to claim their third place tournament finish. Centreville dug their claws deep into their Viking opponents early and never let up. Going 5-0 on the day were 120 pounder Michael Vu, 182 pounder Tyler Love, and 195 pounder Joey Steinbach. Vu pounded out 3 pins, a decision and a forfeit. Tyler Love flattened 4 of his opponents by way of fall and majored another. Joey Steinbach ended the day with 3 pins, a major decision, and a forfeit . As a team, the Wildcats performed and responded well after their poor performance last week against Westfield and Robinson. The losses to the Bulldogs and the Rams put Centreville at 1-3 in the Concorde district with their final duals against Chantilly and Herndon rapidly approaching. Centreville next competes at the Mountaineer Duals in Berlin PA this weekend (01-19-13).

With 9 place winners at this past weekend’s Battle At The Bridge wrestling tournament in Chesapeake City Maryland, the Wildcats knew they were in the hunt for the team title with North Penn Pennsylvania, but were unsure how close the team race was. After awarding the heavyweight class their awards, Centreville was crowned team champions. Going into the event, the wildcats anticipated a good weekend as many of the cats drew competitive seeds. After a disappointing semi final round, coach Belyea and the rest of the staff figured any run at the title was dashed as Centreville only won one of their six bouts. However, the team pulled together and rattled off several wins over the next two rounds to place 9 wrestlers in the top 6.
Victor Echevarria made the run to the finals look easy as he dominated his way through his bracket picking up bonus points for his team along the way. Placing third and recovering from semi final losses were Connor Mitchell at 145 pounds, Will Fulton at 152 pounds, and Tyler Love at 182 pounds. All three battled back with impressive wins both in the consi-semis as well as the consolation finals. Bowing out in the consi-finals and taking fourth on the weekend were 195 pounder Joey Steinbach and HWT Jason park. Also placing were 126 pounder Joey Nowak, 160 pounder Dillon Dull, and 220 pounder Jordan Brooks. The team effort was special all weekend and should prove vital for the upcoming dual meet portion of the season. The Wildcats find themselves in dual competition for the remainder of the season. On Wednesday January 9th Concorde District competition continues with duals against state ranked Robinson and Westfield. Centreville is currently 1-0 in the district and anxious to mix it up with the rest of the Concorde District. Following Wednesday’s meet, Centreville travels to Annandale on Saturday January 12th and will see the likes of Patriot High School at 9:00 AM, Lake Braddock at 10:15 AM, Woodbridge HS at 11:30 Am, and Yorktown HS at 2:00 PM.
Go Get Em’ CATS

The Centreville Wildcats started the new year off with an alleyway beatdown of the Oakton Cougars last night in their first Concorde District dual meet of the season. The Wildcats showed the Cougars who the Alpha cat in the Concorde District was by pouncing all over Oakton 52-23. Oakton stalked their way into Centreville’s gym with only 9 battle ready wrestlers, and handed the Wildcats 30 points in forfeits. The catfight began at 182 pounds where sophomore Tyler Love picked up a major decision over Quentin Newcomer 12-1 Love, who boasts a 15-5 record on the season ended the match with a barrage of backpoints to pick up the major decision for his team. The next Wildcat to enter the fight was Joey Steinbach at 195 pounds. Steinbach, 17-5 on the season sunk his claws into Cougar senior Austin Kendall and picked up the fall 5:27 into the bout. Leading 10-0 going into the 220 pound match, Centreville’s Jordan Brooks picked up the first forfeit of the evening, expanding the home teams lead to 16-0. At heavyweight, senior Jason Park didn’t waste any time tearing into his Cougar opponent, pinning Connor Fagan in just 28 seconds. Park attacked right from the opening whistle taming the cougar heavyweight quickly and adding another 6 points to the team score. Centreville picked up two more forfeits at 106 and 113 pounds making the score 34-0 heading into the 120 pound match. Victor Echevarria (106 lbs) 16-5 on the season and Chung Do Kim (113 lbs) 4-9 on the season walked out onto the mat to get their hands raised and add to what appeared to be a real alleyway beatdown for the Wildcats. Sophomore Michael Vu, 8-12 at 120 pounds got the action going again with 4-1 victory over Alex Schlegel. Vu used a pair of takedowns to upend the Cougar 120 pounder. Just when the innocent bystanders thought the cougars had been thoroughly whooped by the Wildcats, Oakton sent senior Eddie Gerow onto the mat to mix it up with the Centreville senior Joey Nowak. Gerow brought in a 12-2 record for his fight with Nowak who sported a 6-8 record on the year. The two cats didn’t waste any time getting all knotted up, as Gerow ended the ruckus with a 16-0 tech fall and giving his pride of Cougars a little hope heading into the final 6 matches of the night. At 132 pounds, freshman Akash Singh picked up his first win of the season defeating sophomore Alex Pehrson 5-0. With the match sewn up for the Wildcats, Cougar freshman Eric Merten must not have gotten the news as he stuck Centreville 138 pounder Garrett Quartana firmly to the mat picking up the pin at the 5:15 mark of the bout. Apparently the Cougars still had a lot of fight in them as they picked up 12 points over the next four matches. At 145 pounds Oakton senior Will Savino pinned first time starter Tommy Healy, and at 170 pounds, Cougar standout Matt Notarangelo picked up the fall over Will Johnson. Notarangelo is currently undefeated on the year with a 13-0 record. He showed why he is unbeaten this year as he racked up 3 takedowns and a set of backpoints on his way to his 13th win. In between Oakton’s pins, Centreville picked up two more forfeits in the way of 152 pounder Will Fulton and 160 pounder Dillon Dull.
When the dust finally settled from the Concorde Cat Fight, the scoreboard leaned Centreville’s way, 52-23. Now 1-0 in the district, Centreville’s next Concorde District match will find them butting heads with Westfield and Robinson next Wednesday night at Robinson Secondary School. Robinson is currently ranked 3rd in the state with the Bulldogs of Westfield on their heels ranked 4th. Wrestling will begin at 6:00 PM.

Over the Holidays, the Rassle Cats competed in the Appalachian Duals and the Mount Mat Madness. The App Duals were contested at Skyline HS in Front Royal. Centreville won matches against Manassas Park (46-32), Strasberg (49-30), and Mountainview (51-28), but suffered losses to Woodgrove and Loudoun County HS.
Freshman standout, 106 pounder, Victor Echevarria went 6-0 as did Tyler Love and Joey Steinbach. Winning 5 matches was Will Johnson, and going 4-2 on the weekend was Connor Mitchell. Dillon Dull finished up 3-3 and Joey Nowak wrestled to a 3-2 record for the tournament.
The following weekend (Dec. 28-29), the team traveled to Baltimore for the Mount Mat Madness. Placing for the Wildcats were Connor Mitchell (6th at 145), Dillon Dull (4th at 160), Joey Steinbach (5th at 195), and Jason Park (4th at HWT). Centreville next wrestles at The Battle At The Bridge in Chesapeake Maryland this weekend (Jan 4-5).

Seven Centreville wrestlers placed in the 30 team NOVA Classic Wrestling Tournament over the weekend. Centreville was in fourth place after the first round, but cruised into the lead after round two. The matcats kept that lead right into the final round only to lose it to the 2012 NOVA Classic Champions, Battlefield High School. All Centreville wins through the first two rounds were by pin giving the Wildcats a feast of bonus points. The wildcats had a rough final round only managing one win. Dillon Dull won his fifth/sixth place match solidifying Centreville’s second place team finish.
The Wildcats put four wrestlers into the finals and three others in the placement matches Saturday night. At 106 pounds Victor Echevarria continued to dominate the start to his high school career after placing fourth last weekend ay McDonogh, Victor romped his way through the NOVA Classic on his way to a second place finish. During his semi final bout, Echevarria found himself down early to a much bigger and stronger wrestler but through his relentless tenacity, Victor finished the bout strong by putting his Paul VI opponent to his back and picking up the win. The young wildcat is off to a fantastic start this season with a grueling schedule remaining. At 120 pounds Michael Vu found the podium for the second time in his young career placing fifth. Vu began the weekend with two impressive wins, but was upended in the quarters. Michael fought his way back to a fifth place finish. Connor Mitchell and Joey Steinbach were dominant in their opening rounds making it all the way to the semi finals where they picked up medical forfeits. Both wildcat wrestlers were given the win due to their opponents inability to wrestle due to injury. Mitchell ran into a tough Battlefield High School wrestler and ended up second. Steinbach took his final match right to the closing seconds before getting taken down to his back and relenting the top step of the podium to his Jefferson opponent. Will fulton, the Wildcat 152 pounder, put together a spectacular tournament but came up short in his bid to the finals. Will bounced back from his semi final loss to earn a spot in the consolation finals before dropping that bout and finishing fourth. The second year senior picked up a few pins on the weekend and greatly contributed to his teams second place finish. At 160 pounds Dillon Dull continued to impress finishing fifth. Dull rebounded from a quarter final loss and clawed his way back to finish fifth. Dillon just keeps battling and has been very good at keeping himself in matches and giving himself opportunities to win. The final Centreville placer was Tyler Love at 182 pounds. Love crushed his way to the semi’s before dominating his South lakes opponent and eventually getting an injury default victory as his aggressive style was too much for the Seahawk wrestler.
Although 7 wrestlers placed there were other stellar performances for the matcats. Chung Do Kim (113), Will Johnson (170). Jordan Brooks (220), and Jason Park (HWT) all came up one match short of joining their teammates on the podium. but all played crucial roles in Centreville’s strong early season showing.
The Wildcat wrestlers due battle next at Skyline High School in the Appalacian Dual Tournament on December 22nd and 23rd
